Monthly Spotlight: April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day

April Fools' Day, or All Fools' Day, takes its name from a centuries-old tradition among the English, Scots, and French of playing practical jokes on April 1. The day has persisted in American culture since colonial times, although it has naturally not received official recognition or encouragement from schools or governments. It has been called “a holiday of the mind, not of the state.” -Salem Press Encyclopedia

Originally, pranks were held out for friends and family members. From France taping fish to people's backs to Scotland creating the now classic "Kick Me" sign to England and Canada making it known to only pull pranks in the morning, a lot has been done over the years. As of late, people often still do little pranks such as these (though many don't involve fish as much) between friends and families; but with the expansion in technology and social media, some pranks are made on a larger scale.
