How to Outline

Outlining a paper is an easy way to keep all your thoughts and sources in line. There are different ways to go about outlining a paper, so use the best way that works for you. Here is an example of how you can outline:

  1. Put your thesis statement at the beginning.
  2. List the major points that support your thesis. Label them in Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.).
  3. List supporting ideas or arguments for each major point. Label them in capital letters (A, B, C, etc.).
  4. If you have more information you'd like to add, continue to subdivide each supporting idea until your outline is fully developed. Label them 1, 2, 3, etc., and then a, b, c, etc.
